Timing Belt

Timing belts play a key role in the operation of your engine. They are basically a reinforced rubber band with teeth which turn the crankshaft, camshaft and, in more modern engines, operate the water pump. The timing belt synchronizes the camshaft to the crankshaft position. This ensures the valves will open and close at the proper time in relation to the position of the pistons.

Timing belts are generally made to last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles in your vehicle. As with most items regarding your car, you should check the car manufacturer’s recommendations for a more accurate time frame. It is wise to visually inspect your belts once a month for signs of damages such as tears, cracks or excessive wear. If it very important to change your timing belt before it breaks. If it does break, it can cause serious damage to your engine and could be very costly to repair.

Since most belts require other engine parts to be removed, changing a timing belt should be performed only by a skilled technician. When your timing belt is changed, it also may be wise to change your water pump at the same time.

If you feel your timing belts are in need of changing, feel free to call or stop by any one of Napletons over 60 dealerships nationwide. Our service department will be happy to assist you and will answer any questions you may have.
